Women of A Certain Age
This is what most categories label as women’s fiction with characters over sixty. I include in this group of novels the women over fifty-five who are on the post-menopausal stretch of life. One year of life without menstruation is the birthday of menopause. And these are the stories about that life journey. Women characters over sixty sharing the spiritual and emotional gifts, the physical changes. New dramas with more complex humor and strength than when younger. Some women truly love for the first time.
In many stories, community plays an even more complex and valued role. Family can mean any group that comes together in love and with commitment, and that family role is often a group of people who serve one another’s needs, often when there is really no other to be there for them. This comes to play in part, with a few of these novels.
The group setting, the friendship context is strong in these… The Beach House. Mrs. Palfrey at the Claremont. Ladies of Covington Send Their Love. The Gardens of Covington. A Breath Floats By.
Romance. In choosing these books, I have avoided the characterization of the contemporary ‘cougar’ who finds she prefers a much younger man. However, the heart feels what it feels. At any age. Women over sixty sometimes realize they have fallen in love, loved with all their heart and purely, for the first time. Dancing In the Low Country. A Case of Wild Justice. Mrs. Palfrey at the Claremont. Star Gazing.
Humor. Well, when women of a certain age decide it is what it is, there can be nothing but the shrug and dance. Breaking Out of Bedlam. Miss Julia Speaks Her Mind. Husbands May Come and Go But Friends Are Forever.
Drama. Women Don’t Need to Write. On the Occasion of My Last Afternoon. The Vineyard. Every Last Cuckoo. The Beach House. Olive Kitteridge. The Help. The Kitchen God’s Wife. How to Make An American Quilt. The Three Weissmann’s of Westport. Making Toast. Mrs. Bridge.
There are other pages for women’s fiction. Characters over forty. Women’s fiction death. Women’s fiction divorce. Women’s fiction friendship. Women’s fiction spirituality.
