What does that mean? Women of a certain age? Over forty, fifty, sixty?
Well, I gather from other opinions and from Amazon and Barnes & Noble fiction book categories that ‘coming of age fiction’ is over thirty-eight or so. Peri-menopausal women to menopause. ‘Women of a certain age fiction’ seems to include women forty and over, though this group is more the women over fifty-five, so menopausal to post-menopause.
On this slideshow, the books are women forty and over, though in The Outlander Series and in Time Is A River, where 38-year-old Belle is the youngest of our mature characters. Really, what does it take to be mature? You don’t need to get to seventy, I hope. Enjoy.
Women’s Fiction – Novels About Relationships, Friendship, Divorce, Family, Life Questions, Aging, Perhaps Romance.
Women change and grow. Their life journey takes them to an untidy, imperfect ending of the novel quite often. But as women readers know, especially women of a certain age, this imperfect ending is life. It’s the roads we choose on the path before us and how we deal with that ending when we get there that makes all the difference.
It takes all kinds……
The Mermaid Chair. Seeking Sara Summers. Adelaide Einstein. The Young Balboas. The Postmistress. Husbands May Come and Go But Friends Are Forever, a churning mix of friendship and life challenges faced with gusto. The Beach House. Around Every Corner, a woman’s choice at fostering a K-9 pup shakes up the family in a good way. A Breath Floats By with friendship, infidelity, divorce, terminal illness and faith. Year of Pleasures. Paris Imperfectly.
Women characters over forty in contemporary fiction have transcended from backdrop mothers of perfectly lovely daughters to women who face challenges and love head-on.
Humor. All of these books, I think. Most notable, The Murderous Urges of Ordinary Women.
Drama. Naked In the Rain. The Hours. Mrs. Dalloway. The Season of Second Chances. The Castaways. Year of Pleasures, a woman redefines her life after the death of her husband, as in Off Season. Heart and Soul. The Summer Before Dark. Colony. The Outlander Series, the characters begin in mid-thirties but age during the series. The Scenic Route. The Mermaid Chair.
Friendship and coming of age fiction. Always includes divorce or relationship transmutation. Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood, a drama and humorous mix between the friendship of women and the long-blistering resentment of marriage. First Wives Club. Red Hat Club. Hot Flash Club. A Year On Ladybug Farm and At Home On Ladybug Farm. Husbands May Come and Go But Friends Are Forever. Susannah’s Garden. Beach Trip. The Beach House. How to Make An American Quilt. Quartet of Autumn and Some Tame Gazelle (UK). A Breath Floats By.
